One of the most popular attractions in Aix-en-Provence is Place Richelme, an elegant public square located in the heart of the city. This picturesque plaza has been a focal point for social gatherings since it was first built in 1660 by Pierre Puget de La Serre.
Place Richelme was designed to be a place where locals could come together and enjoy each other’s company. The square features several fountains, including one designed by Jean Baptiste Thomas Vialard that dates back to 1762. In addition to these stunning water features, there are also many statues throughout Place Richelme that pay homage to some of Aix-en-Provence’s most famous citizens, such as King René I and Pope Clement VI.
The centrepiece of Place Richelme is undoubtedly its magnificent 18th century fountain known as Fontaine des Quatre Dauphins (Fountain of Four Dolphins). This impressive structure stands tall at over seven meters high and is made up of four dolphins spewing out streams of water into two large basins below them. It was originally commissioned by Louis XVIII but wasn’t completed until 1901 when it was finally unveiled during a grand ceremony attended by many dignitaries from across Europe. Today, this majestic fountain remains one of the main attractions on Place Richelme and continues to draw crowds from all around, who come just to admire its beauty and take photos with it as their backdrop.
Aside from admiring its architectural wonders, visitors can also find plenty else to do on Place Richelme like shopping at local boutiques or sampling some delicious Provencal cuisine at one of the many restaurants nearby. On Sundays especially, you’ll find people gathering here for leisurely strolls through this charming area while listening to street musicians perform traditional French music – adding even more charm and character to this already enchanting destination.
