Mango Garden [Jardim da Manga]

Located near the University of Coimbra, this gorgeous garden offers visitors a chance to experience nature and history all at once.

The Mango Garden was originally created by an Italian architect named Giacomo Azzolini in 1772. At that time, it was known as “O Jardim de Santa Cruz” or The Garden of Santa Cruz. It was designed as a part of the university’s botanical gardens and featured exotic plants from all over Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America. Over time, however, it became popularly known as Mango Garden due to its abundance of mango trees planted along its pathways.

Today, the Mango Garden still features some of those original plants – including species such as magnolia trees (which were introduced during Emperor Dom Pedro II’s visit in 1853), cork oaks (planted in 1880) and even some rare specimens like Chinese bamboo which were brought back from Macau by Portuguese sailors after trading with China centuries ago.

Visitors can also admire two large ponds located within the garden, which are filled with water lilies – a unique feature that makes for great photo opportunities. There’s also plenty to explore here; winding paths lead you through various sections, where you will find secluded benches perfect for taking a break or enjoying lunch on-the-go while admiring your surroundings.

In addition to its natural beauty, visitors can learn about the history behind this special place thanks to informative plaques scattered throughout the grounds detailing important facts about each plant species present there today – making it both educational and enjoyable at once.
