The Covered Market

Situated in the heart of this charming French city, it is one of the oldest markets in Europe and an absolute must-see for visitors.

Built between 1480 and 1500 by local artisans, The Covered Market was designed to protect traders from harsh weather conditions while allowing them to sell their wares year round. It has remained virtually unchanged since its construction, with its traditional timber frame structure still intact today. As you wander through the market, you’ll be met with a variety of stalls selling everything from fresh produce and spices to handmade crafts and souvenirs.

The Covered Market also serves as a cultural hub within Colmar; here you can find painters creating works inspired by their surroundings or musicians playing traditional Alsatian tunes on accordions or wooden flutes known as ‘fife’s’. During special occasions such as Christmas markets or wine festivals, locals gather here to celebrate together with live music performances throughout the day.

If you happen to visit during lunchtime, don’t miss out on trying some delicious Alsatian cuisine at one of many restaurants inside The Covered Market – try dishes like choucroute garnie (sauerkraut served with various meats) or tarte flambée (a type of pizza topped with crème fraîche).
