Santa Justa Lift

Located at the end of Rua de Santa Justa, it stands 45 meters tall and offers stunning views of the city. Built in 1902 by engineer Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, this unique elevator was designed to connect two levels of Lisbon’s Baixa district.

The lift is a striking example of Neo-Gothic architecture that features intricate ironwork and ornamental details throughout its design. Its exterior façade consists of cast iron columns with decorative capitals and a large clock on top. Inside, passengers are treated to breathtaking views from the observation deck as they ascend or descend between Carmo Square on one side and Largo do Carmo on the other.

Since its construction over 100 years ago, Santa Justa Lift has been an integral part of Lisbon’s culture and history – so much so that it even appears on some Portuguese stamps. Today it remains popular among both locals and tourists alike who come to admire its beauty or take advantage of convenient transportation between two points in downtown Lisbon.
