Built on the banks of the Ebro River, it has been a place of worship for centuries, with its rich history attracting visitors from all over the world.
The original construction of the basilica dates back to 1681 when King Felipe V ordered that a church be built on top of an old mosque located at this site. The building was designed by architect Francisco Herrera el Mozo and took seven years to complete. Its baroque façade features two bell towers, while inside there are several chapels dedicated to different saints including St James (Santiago), St Christopher (San Cristobal) and Our Lady Of The Pillar (Nuestra Señora del Pilar).
The basilica is also known for its connection to Santiago de Compostela as it was believed that Saint James’ remains were brought here in 8th century AD by Bishop Ramiro I. In addition, legend has it that Virgin Mary appeared atop a pillar here in 40 AD before she ascended into heaven – hence why it’s called “Our Lady Of The Pillar”.
Today, visitors can still marvel at this majestic structure which stands tall above Zaragoza’s skyline; they can explore its many chapels or simply admire its grandeur from afar. Every year millions flock here during October 12th – 15th celebrations where they witness religious processions throughout the city streets culminating with fireworks displays over El Pilar square below.
